Using a hexagonal crucible reduces this wasted space, allowing a larger internal diameter of the crucible and hence more ash capacity. The chance of the capsule not dropping cleanly into the bore of the crucible is also reduced.   See Fig. 2

Increasing the length of the crucible from 30 to 40mm allows a further increase in volume of the crucible, the combined result being a doubling of the volume available for ash collection.

For 9mm ID tubes, we can use an octagonal crucible without restricting the carrier gas flow thus increasing the capacity further.     See Fig. 3
