Capsules are used for sample containment and aid in the flux of materials when melting and extracting the gasses.
Tin Foil Cones
Used for larger bulky samples, often with the “Manual Press” (E2537). N/Protein determination of grains, or C/N determination of soils are typical examples.
Tin Foil Squares
Same as above, however the user has to form the “cone” shape.
Tin Boat and/or Pressed Tin Capsules
These are typically used for solid samples. The use of “boats” versus “capsules” is mostly personal preference. The boats tend to be a bit larger. Some find the folding of the boats easier, some find it more difficult. The same can be said for the pressed tin capsules.
Smooth Walled Tin Capsules
These are typically used for liquid samples with a sealing press (such as F5109). These are available in many different sizes, which correspond to the sample size you wish to analyze.
Smooth Walled Nickel Capsules
Nickel is used as a flux in the analysis of oxygen and nitrogen in titanium and other refractory alloys like zirconium and tungsten. The nickel capsules combine with the nickel baskets allowing the user to put powder samples in the capsule crimp the top and then insert the capsule into the nickel basket for the analysis.
Silver Boats and Pressed Capsules
These are used mostly for two typical applications:
1) Determination of oxygen – Using silver avoids the side reaction of forming tin oxide if you do these determinations with tin capsules.
2) Determination of organic carbon – Inorganic carbon can be removed from a sample by first weighing it into a silver boat or capsule, adding concentrated acid (e.g. HCl) and gently heating. The remaining sample in the foil has only organic carbon. ou cannot use tin in this application as the acid will dissolve.
